As students prepare to return to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) across the country, Student Housing of America, Inc. (SHA) is dedicated to addressing the pressing housing challenges they face. Founded in 1999, SHA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to provide safe, affordable residential housing and vital resources that sustain student enrollment, foster academic excellence, and support physical and mental well-being.
The Growing Need for Student Housing
HBCUs, which represent 9% of college enrollment nationwide and account for 1 in 5 Black college graduates, are experiencing a significant increase in attendance. This surge in enrollment highlights the urgent need for improved student housing solutions. Unfortunately, decades of underfunding and neglect have left many HBCUs struggling to provide adequate housing. A recent study revealed that many HBCU students face housing insecurity, with a notable percentage reporting homelessness in the past year. Vulnerable groups, including female, LGBTQ, and low-income students, experience housing and food insecurity at even higher rates.
The HBCU Healthy Housing (H3) Initiative
In response to these challenges, SHA created the HBCU Healthy Housing (H3) Initiative. This initiative aims to purchase and renovate distressed properties near HBCU campuses to create state-of-the-art, safe, and affordable housing for students. Leveraging our tax-exempt status, SHA can provide partner property owners with cost savings and student residents with affordable housing.
Key components of the H3 Initiative include:
- Need-Based Grants and Zero-Interest Loans: Providing financial assistance to students in need, ensuring they have access to stable housing without the burden of high-interest debt.
- Food Security Programs (in Development): Addressing food insecurity by offering meal plans and food resources to ensure students have access to nutritious meals.
- Support Programs: Offering informational videos and seminars on mental health, physical wellness, financial management, and security to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed.
- Rent Insurance: Protecting students from the negative impact of unpaid rent on their credit, ensuring they have a future free from financial setbacks.
Extending Support Beyond Our Properties
SHA’s commitment extends beyond the properties we manage. Our support programs are also available to partner universities, benefiting students living on-campus or at other student housing properties. This comprehensive approach ensures that all HBCU students have access to the resources and support they need to thrive academically and personally.
Historic Federal Funding Support
The Biden-Harris Administration recently announced a new record in federal funding and investments in HBCUs, totaling more than $16 billion from Fiscal Years 2021 through 2024. This historic funding demonstrates the Administration’s commitment to ensuring HBCUs have the resources to provide high-quality education and support for their students. The funding includes over $11.4 billion through federal grants, contracting awards, and debt relief for HBCUs, and over $4 billion for HBCU-enrolled students through federal financial aid and educational benefits for veterans. These investments are crucial in addressing the longstanding underfunding of HBCUs and enhancing their capacity to serve as engines of upward economic mobility for Black families and communities.
A Positive Environment for Achievement
At SHA, we believe that a stable and supportive living environment is crucial for student success. By addressing the housing and well-being needs of HBCU students, we are creating a positive environment that fosters academic achievement and personal growth. Our collaboration with HBCUs, corporate partners, and other organizations is key to addressing these challenges and making a meaningful impact on the lives of students.
As you prepare to return to campus, remember that SHA is here to support you every step of the way. Together, we can create a brighter future for all HBCU students, ensuring they have the safe and affordable housing they need to succeed.
